The map below outlines the five main districts that we chose to call out and address in our system. While fountain square isn't very large, it is a hub—or heart—of the city, with events and restaurants bringing many people there. Because of this we decided to put focus on it.
The main issue we wanted to address was the "scary" or "sketchy" dilapidated areas of the city that people did not like walking through. Our signage focuses on popular and/or historic buildings and businesses in the area that serve as either tourist and citizen attractions or historical trivia points. We hoped that this would cause people to venture into these areas once they saw the large signs on the sides of buildings or on the sidewalk leading them to a destination or calling out a piece of history. And with our focus on history, we decided to use old etchings from a type specimens book that related to each piece of trivia.
Some of the larger signs calling out an entire district would have metal fixtures and neon letters so that they would be visible at night.
